Fountain Valley Hires Cross-Country, Basketball Coaches

Chris Madigan has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Fountain Valley, Baron Athletic Director Mike Henigan said Wednesday. Madigan was an assistant at Cal State Los Angeles for the last six seasons.

He takes over for Mike Warrington, who resigned last month. In five seasons under Warrington, Fountain Valley went 64-66 and made the Southern Section playoffs twice.

Fountain Valley also hired Marti Baratti as its cross-country coach, Henigan said. Baratti, who will take a full-time teaching position at Fountain Valley, who formerly coached at Buena Park, was an assistant at Corona del Mar this year.

Carly Draudt of Santa Margarita High committed to Coastal Carolina University, near Myrtle Beach, S.C., Laguna Beach club Coach Michael Soylular said.

SOCCER

Orange County teams continued their domination Tuesday in the second round of the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championship in Pleasanton and Dublin.

In the most lopsided contests, the Southern California (San Juan Capistrano) Blues under-16 girls’ team hammered the Green River (Wyo.) Spurs, 17-0, while the Southern California Blues under-13 girls’ team shut out the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Sting Black, 13-0.

Five other county teams posted shutouts. The Irvine Strikers under-19 boys’ team edged Boise (Idaho) National, 1-0; the Wolfpack (Fountain Valley) under-18 boys’ team defeated Westside (Ore.) Metro Unified, 2-0; the Mission Viejo Magic under 17-girls’ team thrashed Leahi ‘83, 4-0; the Slammers (Newport Beach) under-14 girls’ team toppled United (Utah) Premier, 3-0; and the West Coast (Mission Viejo) FC Premier under-12 girls’ team defeated Sparta (Utah), 4-0.

The Slammers (Newport Beach) under-15 girls’ team beat the Sereno (Ariz.) ’85 Golden Eagles, 7-1.

The Cerritos Regional SC Infinity under-19 girls’ team, which includes many county players, lost to the FC (Wash.) Royals ‘80, 2-1.

The top two teams in each age group advance to the single-elimination playoffs, which start today with quarterfinals and end Sunday with championships. The winners advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship July 25-30 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Fullerton softball Coach Michelle Gromacki and assistants Kelly Ford and Justin Kloczko have been selected the West Region coaching staff of the year for NCAA Division I by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.

The coaches will be featured in the July issue of Fastpitch Delivery magazine and honored at a banquet at the NFCA convention Dec. 1 in San Antonio, Texas.

Gromacki was selected Big West Conference coach of the year after leading the Titans to a 45-15 record, a Big West championship and an NCAA tournament berth in her first season. She was hired on an interim basis in January but recently signed a three-year contract as coach.

* Hillary Hamilton, a softball player from Edison, has received a scholarship to attend Barry University in North Miami, according to her father, John. Hamilton played shortstop for the Chargers but was recruited as a second baseman.

* Erica Bonilla of El Toro has received a softball scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State, according to Coach Jim Daugherty.

Erica’s brother, Clemente Bonilla, also attends Southeast Missouri. An outfielder, Erica was a second team all-South Coast League performer.
