Young Goes to Head of His Class

Outfielder Delmon Young of Camarillo High has been selected the state freshman player of the year in baseball by Cal-Hi Sports.

Senior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest of La Reina High was named state small schools player of the year in softball and named to the all-state team for players from schools of all enrollments.

Making the all-state baseball team were pitcher Matt Harrington of Palmdale and infielders Matt Fisher of Chatsworth and Brian Lipman of Royal.

Selected on the all-state team for players from medium-sized schools were catcher Matt Cunningham of Notre Dame, pitcher Bobby Paschal of Chaminade and infielder Alec Moss of Notre Dame. All-state small schools selections included pitchers Tim Thompson of Grace Brethren and Jeremy Gonzales of Village Christian.

Named to the all-state underclass team were Young, junior catcher Phil Avlas of Kennedy, sophomore pitchers Joe Guntz of Chatsworth and Paschal, junior outfielder Bill Susdorf of Hart and utility players Tyler Adamczyk of Westlake and Adam Geery of Kennedy. Adamczyk is a junior and Geery is a sophomore.

In softball, El Camino Real catcher Christina Enea and Crescenta Valley pitcher Meredith Cervenka, both juniors, were named to the all-state team.

Infielders selected included Brittney Green of Simi Valley and Oli Keohohou of Newbury Park.

Catchers Sara Hall of Calabasas and Jamie Hurst of La Canada were named to the all-state medium-schools team, along with pitchers Christina Lupacchini of Chaminade and Anna Russell of Harvard-Westlake.

Infielders on the medium-schools team included Kaitlyn Reiss of Alemany and Lindsay Weinstein of Chaminade. Amy Rosson of Calabasas made the team as a multipurpose player.

On the all-state small-schools’ team along with Vandergeest are La Reina teammate Kristen Ward and Cornerstone Christian’s Juli Hartnell, both pitchers; outfielders Shannon Fink of St. Bonaventure and Tami Ortiz of Paraclete; and multipurpose player Annie Marostica of St. Bonaventure.

Enea and Highland junior catcher Ashlie D’Errico were named to all-state underclass team, along with Cervenka and Thousand Oaks junior infielder Sheridan Fowler.
