Esperanza Comes Out on Top After Five-Game Match

Brandon Dowhan and Drew Gullixson each had 17 kills to help visiting Esperanza defeat eighth-ranked Santa Margarita in nonleague boys’ volleyball Tuesday.

Esperanza (3-1) won the first game, 15-12; Santa Margarita came back to win 15-6, 15-8. The Aztecs regrouped and won the last two games, 15-11, 15-12.

Damien Scott and Dustin Creager each had 22 kills for Santa Margarita (1-2).

In other nonleague volleyball:

No. 4 Irvine 3, No. 9 Capistrano Valley 0--Kris Kraushaar had 28 kills to help Irvine (3-0) to a 15-10, 15-13, 15-10 victory. Nick Visley had 14 kills for Capistrano Valley (1-2).

No. 6 Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 1--Billy Clayton had 23 kills, Kent Turner had 10 kills and Dustin Illingworth had seven blocks for host Newport Harbor (7-2) in a 15-11, 12-15, 15-12, 15-4 victory.

No. 7 El Toro 3, Edison 0--Jimmy Pelzel had 15 kills and Kyle Martin had 12 kills for El Toro (1-1), which won, 15-5, 15-8, 15-8. Sean McLaren had nine kills for host Edison (0-3).

In nonleague golf:

No. 6 Woodbridge 375, Estancia 440--Medalist Nathan Yates shot a one-under-par 71 for Woodbridge (4-1) at Mesa Verde and Strawberry Farms. Yates shot three-under 33 for the nine holes at Strawberry Farms and birdied on the seventh and ninth holes at Mesa Verde.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

No. 8 Fountain Valley 89, Long Beach Wilson 81--Brandon Dotts’ anchor swim in the 400-yard freestyle relay was the key to the Barons’ victory. Dotts also won the 200 freestyle (1:47.47) and the 100 butterfly (54.12) and was on the winning 200 medley relay team.

Rancho Alamitos 82, Laguna Beach 77--Second and third place finishes determined the outcome of this meet. Senior Mario Salerno (500 freestyle) and sophomore David Nguyen (100 breaststroke) were the only winners for Rancho Alamitos.

Garden Grove 104, Estancia 59--David Collier won the 200 freestyle (2:06.82) and the 500 freestyle (5:57.19) for host Estancia (2-1).

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 16, Fountain Valley 2--Freshman Ben Kritzstein won two of three singles sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, for host Capistrano Valley (3-0). Teammate Mike Nguyen at swept No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

No. 6 Sunny Hills 16, Diamond Bar 2--Joseph Kao swept his singles sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Daniel Chang swept his singles sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, to lead visiting Sunny Hills (2-2).

Bolsa Grande 11, Garden Grove 7--Huy Cai and Lee Nguyen won two of their three doubles sets to help Bolsa Grande (3-1, 1-0) beat defending league champion Garden Grove (0-3, 0-1).

Canyon 10, Servite 8--Junior Travis Kula and senior Kevin Saman won 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, improving to 18-0 this season for Canyon (6-0). Servite dropped to 2-3.

Irvine 15, El Toro 3--Irvine’s Hadley Ogle swept in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. Eric Aarnaes and Pat Robbins won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for the Vaqueros (3-2).

Laguna Beach 12, Mission Viejo 6--Brian Westlake and Nathan Kloke won two of three doubles sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, for host Laguna Beach (2-4).

Laguna Hills 10, Northwood 8--Tim Lee and Justin Shaw swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-4, for host Laguna Hills.

Palos Verdes Peninsula 11, No. 5 Woodbridge 7--Andy Middleton and Paul Strozier won two sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 for visiting Woodbridge (4-2).
