Chatsworth’s DeVos Chosen MVP

Midfielder Shannon DeVos, who helped Chatsworth High win its 11th City Section girls’ soccer title in 13 seasons, has been selected section most valuable player.

Forward Leila Pate and defender Tricia Arosemena of Chatsworth were selected to the All-City team with forward Jennifer Bernson of Kennedy, midfielder Maytal Shvartz and defender Mimi Shvartz of El Camino Real, midfielder Michelle Vega of Granada Hills and forward Angela Veliz of Cleveland.

Earning honorable mention were midfielders Jordana Cail of Monroe, Kori McLaughlin of El Camino Real and Lindsey Redlin of Chatsworth.

All-Invitational selections included defender Adriana Cibrian of Reseda, midfielder Lizette Garcia of Poly, defender Mae Murakami of Reseda and defender Erica Tovar of Poly.

* Defender Mike Erush and goalkeeper John Wall of Birmingham, defender Diego Farfan of Kennedy and defender Edwin Miranda of Reseda, all seniors, were selected to the All-City boys’ soccer team.

Forward Jaime Castellanos of Sylmar, midfielder Ian Kogan of El Camino Real, goalkeeper Mariano Merino of Kennedy and defender Zack Seldman of El Camino Real were chosen to the second team. Merino and Castellanos are seniors, Kogan and Seldman are juniors.

Defender Danny Corales of Monroe, defender Oscar Gaona of San Fernando, forward Jaime Gomez of Birmingham and forward Jason Lara of El Camino Real were chosen to the third team. Gaona is a senior, Corales and Gomez are juniors and Lara is a sophomore.

FOOTBALL

* Jerry Slimak, who served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, St. Genevieve and Monroe high schools, died Saturday of cancer. He was 45. Slimak had coached at Notre Dame since 1987.

He is survived by brothers Jim and Andy and parents Agnes and Jerome. A viewing is scheduled at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Funeral Home in Burbank. The funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Holy Rosary in Sun Valley.

* Tom Crawford, former offensive coordinator at Birmingham, has been hired as coach at Bishop Diego in Santa Barbara.

BASEBALL

* Former Kennedy pitcher Jon Garland, 20, trying to make the Chicago White Sox roster, pitched five shutout innings Monday while allowing three hits in a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners in a spring training game.

* Northridge will host a 30th-anniversary celebration honoring its 1970 NCAA Division II national-champion baseball team on April 15 before its game against UCLA.

The 1970 Matadors, coached by Bob Hiegert, were 41-21, including an 18-6 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Northridge defeated Nicholls State, 2-1, in the Division II final.

Pitcher Lew Lerner that season established what remains the Northridge single-season earned-run average record at 1.25.

BASKETBALL

* Tom Strasburger will not return as girls’ coach at Thousand Oaks, Athletic Director Lou Lichtl said. Strasburger’s teams were 19-31 in two seasons.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Deena Drossin and Lauren Fleshman were the top U.S. finishers in their respective races in the world cross-country championships in Vilamoura, Portugal, on Saturday.

Drossin, a 1991 graduate of Agoura High, finished 12th in the 8,000-meter women’s race to pace the U.S. to a third-place finish.

Fleshman, a 1999 graduate of Canyon High and a freshman at Stanford, finished 26th in the 6,000-meter junior women’s race to lead the U.S. to sixth place.

TRACK AND FIELD

* John Walker of Birmingham High, who missed the Channel Coast Invitational at Camarillo High on Saturday after sustaining a concussion in an automobile accident Friday, is expected to run in the Pasadena Games at Pasadena City College on Saturday.

Walker won the freshman-sophomore races in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediates in the City Section championships last year.

MOTORSPORTS

* Ron Hornaday Jr. finished eighth in the SunCom 200 NASCAR Busch series race Saturday at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.

Hornaday is sixth in the points standings.

The race was won by Winston Cup driver Mark Martin.

* Sean Woodside’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck series debut ended on the 89th lap of the Chevy Trucks 150 Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Woodside, a Saugus resident, finished 30th after the truck’s ignition failed. The defending NASCAR Winston West champion was racing Ford equipment for the first time.

Lance Hooper of Palmdale finished 16th. The race was won by Joe Ruttman.

Bill Sedgwick of Acton finished sixth in the NAPA Auto Parts 100 Winston West series opener held as part of the same program. That race was won by Kevin Richards.

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished 10th in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Saturday at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix. The race was won by Richard Griffin.

* Randy Moody of Ventura nosed out Gary Howard of Anaheim to win the 30-lap sprint car main event Saturday at Ventura Raceway.

Rich Wolfe of Studio City won the 30-lap International Motor Contest Assn. modified main event, Todd Keeter of Oak View won the 20-lap I-4 modified main event and Brian Weaver won the 20-lap pony stock main event.
