San Clemente Forced to Go 5 Games to Win

Sixth-ranked San Clemente could manage only a split of the first four games in its South Coast League boys’ volleyball opener Wednesday against visiting Capistrano Valley, but by the fifth game, the Tritons hit their stride.

Dan Talcott had 74 assists and Gray Garrett had 34 kills for San Clemente, which won, 7-15, 15-13, 15-5, 11-15, 15-3.

Spencer Bemus had 25 kills, five blocks and three aces for the Tritons (2-2, 1-0.) Paul Johnson led Capistrano Valley (2-3, 0-1) with a match-high 38 kills and Scott Campbell had 61 assists.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 3, Century 0--Brian Morris had 13 kills and Bermundo Zane 12 to help visiting Cypress to a 15-10, 15-8, 15-9 victory. Justin Griffith had 12 kills for Century (4-4, 1-0.

El Dorado 3, Katella 0--David Patten had 10 kills, leading the way for the Golden Hawks (5-2, 1-1), who swept, 15-3, 15-6, 15-8.

Loara 3, Kennedy 1--Unbeaten Loara, which did not win a match last season, won its ninth this season year, 10-15, 15-11, 15-4, 15-5 at Kennedy. Yam Lee led Saxons (9-0, 1-0) with 20 kills.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolda Grande 3, Rancho Alamitos 1--Cuco Jasso had a match-high 14 kills and David Nguyen had 13 for host Bolsa Grande (8-0, 4-0).

Garden Grove 3, Santiago 1--Ed Rodriguez had 20 kills and Binh Le had 37 assists to lead Garden Grove (5-5, 4-0) to a 15-4, 12-15, 15-1, 15-8 victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 3 Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Beach 0--Greg Stampley recorded a match-high 15 kills and Brian Gallagher had nine for the host Sea Kings (4-1, 1-0), who won, 15-5, 15-5, 15-5.

Costa Mesa 3, Estancia 0--David Zan Ngo had 12 kills and Gary Bogert had 35 assists for host Costa Mesa (4-1, 1-0) in a 15-5, 15-5, 15-5 win.

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Marina 3, Edison 0--Drew Wilson had seven kills and Micah Gilmore had five for visiting Marina (5-1, 1-0), in a 15-7, 15-12, 15-5 victory.

No. 6 Fountain Valley 3, No. 10 Huntington Beach 1--Nathan Hagstrom had 21 kills and Tommy Plass had 19 for Fountain Valley (4-1, 1-0).

Matt Wendt had a match-high 25 kills for Huntington Beach (3-3, 0-1).
