Big First Sparks Edison to Upset

Edison scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 victory over fifth-ranked Fountain Valley in a Sunset League baseball game Wednesday at Fountain Valley.

Edison (12-10-1, 5-7) got three hits, five walks, a hit batter and an error in the big inning.

Tim Robertson and Jeff Gilmore combined on a four-hitter, with Gilmore getting the victory. Brent Roumeliotis had two hits and four RBIs for the Chargers.

Fountain Valley (16-7, 7-5), which has lost three games in a row, got its run on a home run by Jimmy Goetz.

In another Sunset League game:

Los Alamitos 12, Huntington Beach 2 (6, mercy)--Brandon Glonchak and Gerod Ball each had three hits and three RBIs for Los Alamitos (13-10, 8-4). Adam Sargeant pitched six innings for the victory.

In the Empire League:

Katella 9, No. 10 Cypress 4--John Lorenzen (5-3) struck out seven and had three hits and Erik Echaverria hit a first-inning home run for the visiting Knights (14-9, 6-6). Cypress is 15-8, 7-5.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 4, Buena Park 1--Jon Salazar pitched a three-hitter, Rauly Gutierrez had a triple, single and an RBI and Jason Miller hit a home run for visiting Troy (7-14, 5-7).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 4, Pacifica 3--The host Aztecs (23-2, 9-1) gained at least a share of their eighth straight league title when Jeff Moscoso drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh. Mike McKernan struck out five in three innings of relief, and Tom Zieglowsky (2-1) struck out two in the seventh.

Santiago 3, Rancho Alamitos 1--Brian Pilkington had the only hit for visiting Santiago (13-9, 7-3), a three-run home run in the first inning. He also pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 7, Ocean View 6--A.J. Fernandez singled to score Sergio Villegas in the top of the seventh for the Saints. Rey Flores had four stolen bases for Santa Ana (8-16, 2-7).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 5, Magnolia 4 (8 innings)--Ron Benigno walked with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth to score John Pohlen with the winning run for host Brea Olinda (14-9, 9-3).

Mike Davern struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings for the Wildcats.

Western 3, No. 9 Valencia 2 (9 innings)--Blake Harnden’s two-out ninth-inning homer was the difference for the Pioneers (13-10, 8-4). Jason Zollan (5-0) struck out 12 and losing pitcher Matt Reese (6-3) had 11 strikeouts. Valencia is 16-6, 9-3.

In the Serra League:

Santa Margarita 4, No. 8 Mater Dei 1--Chris Rix hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Mike Foley also homered for the Eagles. Tim Dean (5-1) beat the Monarchs (15-8, 5-3). The second-place Eagles are 10-8, 4-5.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 4, El Toro 1--John Hudgins (9-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out 15 and walking one. The senior right-hander also had a two-run double for the visiting Diablos (13-8, 7-5).

San Clemente 3, No. 3 Trabuco Hills 2--Gavin Monger scored on Justin Sweet’s two-out infield hit in the bottom of the seventh for the Tritons (11-11, 6-6). Kyle Allen (4-3) took the loss for first-place Trabuco Hills (17-6, 9-3).
