Kase, Henson Win City Diving Crowns

Eli Kase of Birmingham High and Melanie Henson of El Camino Real won boys’ and girls’ City Section one-meter diving titles Friday at Valley College.

Kase won with a score of 325.6, beating Eric Schwaneman of Venice, who had 291.1. Kase clinched the title with a 7.5 average on a front double-pike that has a 2.3 degree of difficulty.

Travis Crowley of Venice was third and Sloan Bailey of El Camino Real was fourth.

Henson, who had finished second the last two seasons to teammates, won with a score of 454.7 to beat Debra Oh of Kennedy at 353.0.

Henson received a 7.5 on her inward one-and-a-half somersault that has a 2.2 degree of difficulty to help capture her crown. Sandi Stanen of San Pedro was third. Cory Sills of Birmingham was fifth.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Highland def. Simi Valley, 15-7, 9-15, 15-5, 16-14--Mike Kennedy had two digs, two assists and a block during a 7-1 run and the host Bulldogs (14-0) rallied from a 13-9 deficit in the final game to win in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Kennedy, an outside hitter who rarely plays in the back row, finished with 20 kills, eight digs and five blocks. Highland’s Trent Sorensen added 16 kills, 13 digs and five blocks.

Jon Moreno had 15 kills to lead Simi Valley (13-4).

Royal def. Hart, 15-9, 15-13, 15-9--Kamil Kowalski had 14 kills, Casey Wilkinson added 13 and the Highlanders (19-3) won a Division I first-round match at Royal.

David Russell had 10 kills and eight digs for Royal.

Redondo Union def. Westlake, 15-9, 12-15, 15-7, 12-15, 15-7--Ryan Foltz had 21 kills for Westlake in a Division I playoff match at Redondo.

Wade Carr added 12 kills for Westlake (14-4).

Canyon def. Lakewood, 15-8, 15-4, 15-6--Gideon Gibson had 17 kills and the host Cowboys won in aDivision I match.

Providence def. Santa Clarita Christian, 15-10, 15-3, 16-14--Eric Vaca had 13 kills, 21 digs and five aces and the host Pioneers (18-3) won in the first round of the Division III playoffs.

Josh Janiak added eight blocks for Providence.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Calabasas 10, Malibu 0--Amy Rosson and Heather Bell combined on a one-hitter for Calabasas in a Frontier League game that was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule at Calabasas.

Krystle Chamberlain had two hits and an RBI for Calabasas (17-7, 12-0)

Thousand Oaks 1, Peninsula 0--Michelle Spencer had an RBI single in the fifth inning of the third-place game of the Downey tournament at Peninsula.

Nicole Angelo (22-4) pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts for Thousand Oaks (22-5-1).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 2-1, Utah State 0-2--Veronica Lopez hit a home run in the fourth inning to help the visiting Matadors (25-24-1, 15-8) win the first game of a Big West Conference doubleheader.

Lopez had an RBI single in the seventh to tie the second game, but Stephanie Vasarhely of Utah State (19-37, 6-17) drove in the game-winning run.
