Barber, Moon Try to Be Up to Par in Sectional

Tommy Barber of Notre Dame High, the hottest boys’ golfer in the region the last two weeks, and Roy Moon of Royal, The Times’ 1999 region player of the year, will be among 13 players from the area who will take part in the Southern Section individual championships at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs on Monday.

Barber, who has signed with Long Beach State, shot a four-over-par 148 to win the Mission League title. He shot a two-under 70 to tie for first in the Southern Section Northern team regional at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai on May 8 and a three-under 68 to place second in the North regional individual tournament at Montecito Country Club in Santa Barbara on Monday.

The UCLA-bound Moon shot a four-over 76 in the Central Coast team regional at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc on May 8 and a 74 in the North regional at Montecito. He won his second consecutive Marmonte League title May 4 with a league-record seven-under 274 total for four rounds.

Moon grabbed one of the final four qualifying spots in a sudden-death playoff in the Northern regional last year before tying for fifth in the section championships and tying for second in the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. championships at The SCGA Members’ Club in Murrieta.

Freshman Anthony Kim of Campbell Hall, sophomore Brian Edick of Hart, juniors Mark Modglin of Simi Valley and Jeff Osborn of Flintridge Prep, and senior Justin Ohye of Calabasas also will try to reach the CIF-SCGA tournament June 6 by placing in the top 40.

The City Section will determine its qualifiers for the CIF-SCGA tournament in its championships at Harding Golf Course on Tuesday and at Wilson Golf Course on Wednesday.

Sophomore Edward Turner is favored to win his second consecutive individual title and lead Palisades to itssecond consecutive team championship, but no one expects a wild finish like last year. Turner shot an 86 on the first day and a 65 on the second to edge Scott Bashin of Birmingham, Darrin Schneider of Granada Hills and Kang Doo of San Pedro by one stroke.

“He tried out a new putter,” Coach Richard Pendergast of Chatsworth said of Turner’s horrendous first round last year. “I don’t think you’ll see him do that this year.”

Chatsworth and Granada Hills finished ahead of Palisades in the City 6-A League standings, but the Dolphins shot 399 to beat Chatsworth by three strokes and Granada Hills by eight in the league tournament Thursday.
