Vanguard Beats Azusa Pacific, Advances to Semifinals

Vanguard beat third-seeded Azusa Pacific, 7-2, Wednesday and advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA men’s tennis championships in Lexington, Ky.

It was the third time the Lions had beaten Golden State Athletic Conference foe Azusa Pacific this season. The match was the completion of a quarterfinal match that began Tuesday and was suspended because of rain.

Vanguard (22-3) won five out of six singles matches.

Vanguard, seeded fifth, will play No. 2-seeded Auburn University-Montgomery today for a berth in the finals.

USC freshman Jewel Peterson’s run in the NCAA Division I women’s tennis individual championships was ended by another outstanding freshman Wednesday.

Peterson was overwhelmed by Stanford’s Laura Granville, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals at Pepperdine. Granville, the No. 3-ranked player in the nation, eliminated Zuzana Lesenarova of San Diego, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, earlier in the day.
