Defending champion Chatsworth is the top-seeded team, Roosevelt is second and San Pedro third in the 16-team City Section baseball Championship division playoffs that begin Friday.

West Valley League champion Chatsworth (24-1-1) will play host to Van Nuys Grant (17-9) in its opener. Eastern League champion Roosevelt (26-5) will meet Coliseum League champion Locke (17-7-1) in the first round at East Los Angeles College.

“I’m pleased with being the No. 2 seed,” said Roosevelt Coach Scott Pearson, whose team lost to Lakewood, Long Beach Millikan, Santa Ana Mater Dei, South Gate and Gardena. “Chatsworth is definitely the favorite. After that there is a ton of teams that could win it.

“Carson is seeded eighth and they are good enough to win it all. So is [fifth-seeded] Banning and [fourth-seeded] San Fernando.”

Not to be forgotten is San Pedro (16-10), which beat Carson and Banning for the Marine League title and opens against Granada Hills (15-14). San Pedro was City champion in 1992, the last time a school outside the San Fernando Valley won the title.

Valley schools have won 26 of the last 27 major division titles.

“From the beginning of the season, I thought this could be the year one of us ends that streak,” Pearson said. “But it’s going to be tough.”

University is the top-seeded team in the Invitational division for teams rated 17-32.
