Bryans Double Up for a Victory in Burbank

Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo defeated Cecil Mamiit of Los Angeles and Kyle Spencer of Britain, 7-5, 6-3, in the doubles quarterfinals of the $50,000 U.S. Tennis Assn. Challenger tournament Friday at Burbank Tennis Center.

The top-seeded 22-year-old Bryan twins, in their third season of professional tennis, played at Rio Mesa High and won the NCAA Division I doubles title while at Stanford in 1998.

They will face Garreth Williams of South Africa and Jeff Williams of Tucson, Ariz., in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. today.

Kevin Kim of Fullerton defeated Bob Bryan, 6-4, 7-5, in a quarterfinal singles match Friday.

Bryan beat Oliver Gross of Germany in the first round and Taylor Dent of Newport Beach in the second round.

* Dave Nelson, girls’ tennis coach at Oak Park High the last two seasons, resigned following the Eagles’ Southern Section Division IV playoff loss Thursday. Nelson served several stints as the school’s boys’ and girls’ coach over the last 20 years.

He guided Oak Park to a 12-5 record this season.

No replacement has been named.

BASEBALL

* Pitcher Jered Weaver of Simi Valley High has signed with Long Beach State.

FUND-RAISER

* The inaugural Thousand Oaks High Lancer Baseball Golf Tournament is set for Dec. 4 at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Entry fee is $125 and includes a round of golf, range balls, a cart, lunch and dinner.

There will be an auction in the evening. Proceeds go to Thousand Oaks baseball.

The 18-and-under division tryouts are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Nov. 19.
