Irvine took control of the game early, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter. Young got the Vaqueros started with a 66-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes 39 seconds left in the quarter to make it 6-0, then capped a 51-yard drive with a three-yard scoring run with 29 seconds left in the quarter.

On the next play, Woodbridge sophomore quarterback Tim Kegel, under pressure from a heavy rush, threw a wobbly pass that was intercepted by Joe Bollard and returned 36 yards for a touchdown.

Young scored on runs of 12 yards and one yard in the second quarter and Irvine led, 34-0, at halftime. Irvine had 206 yards in the first half and held Woodbridge to minus-11 yards rushing and eight yards total.

Woodbridge’s defense could not stop Irvine until Coach Terry Henigan pulled his starters midway through the third quarter. Young added his fifth touchdown early in the third quarter, a 47-yard run that made it 41-0.

Jack Egan finished Irvine’s scoring with a 35-yard interception return.

Starting tailback Peter Abe had 10 carries for 47 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with a minor knee injury.
