Burdine Leads La Habra Past South Hills

Keao Burdine had a team-high 37 kills and Maggie Williams had 64 assists to help second-seeded La Habra edge West Covina South Hills, 5-15, 15-13, 15-11, 10-15, 15-6 in a Southern Section Division II-A girls’ volleyball playoff semifinal Tuesday at La Habra High.

Kristina Baum had 16 kills and nine blocks and Jenny Habben had 17 digs and 13 kills for the Highlanders, who will play top-seeded Lakewood St. Joseph in the finals at Cypress College Friday or Saturday.

In Division I-AA:

San Clemente 3, Upland 0--By winning, 15-11, 16-14, 15-5, the second-seeded Tritons (25-1) handed visiting Upland (25-1) its first loss of the season. Katy Daly had 12 kills, 17 digs and three blocks, Megan Blackshire had 12 digs and 11 kills.

Heather Morgan had 17 digs and two aces for San Clemente, which faces Long Beach Poly in the final.

Long Beach Poly 3, Esperanza 1--Julie Handy had 14 kills and Kristy Chester had 13 for fourth-seeded host Esperanza (14-6), which lost, 15-10, 17-15, 10-15, 15-4, to the top-seeded Jackrabbits.

In Division III-AA:

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 3, Corona del Mar 2--UCLA-bound outside hitter Chrissie Zartman had 30 kills and 22 digs for the host Knights (21-10), who won, 7-15, 15-10, 15-8, 11-15, 15-9. Sara Deming had 21 kills, Lindsay Anstandig had 20 kills, Noelle Quinn had 15 blocks and Jacqueline Becker had 52 assists and 11 digs for the Sea Kings (18-9).

In Division IV-AA:

Thousand Oaks La Reina 3, Laguna Beach 1--Junior middle blockers Brittany Wood (14 kills) and Sarah Salem (13 kills) led the visiting Artists (15-6), who lost, 15-7, 12-15, 15-7, 15-5.

Laguna Beach (15-6) did manage to snap La Reina’s streak of winning 70 consecutive games by taking the second game of the match. But Jennifer Ryan, who had 26 kills, 17 digs and five blocks, helped the Regents (25-0) win the last two games easily.

In Division IV-A:

Whittier Christian 3, San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 1--After dropping the first game, 12-15, the Heralds rebounded to defeat the division’s top seed, 17-15, 16-14, 15-8. Joelle Sagehorn had 17 kills and Meagan Kimes had 11 for Whittier Christian (19-8), which will play Sierra Madre Maranatha in the finals.

In Division V-AA:

St. Margaret’s 3, Palos Verdes Chadwick 1--Kamme Hauser had 11 kills, Polly Bendush and Monique Kettler had 10 each and Amanda Gittleman had 12 digs and seven aces to lead top-seeded St. Margaret’s (19-1), which won, 15-10, 15-10, 11-15, 15-8 and will play Pasadena Poly in the finals.

In Division V-A:

Hemet Baptist Christian 3, Liberty Christian 0--The Minutemen lost to the top-seeded Warriors (25-2), 15-12, 15-11, 15-11. Junior Jessica Cure had a team-high 10 kills for Liberty Christian (18-3).
