Carson Starts Rolling in 52-7 Win Over Birmingham

Carson High is starting to look like a team that can win a second consecutive City Section football championship.

The Colts gained 430 yards and shut down Van Nuys Birmingham, 52-7, in a Championship division quarterfinal Wednesday night at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

James Robinson rushed for 189 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of three, 12, 16 and 23 yards. He scored on back-to-back possessions to open the second half, giving the Colts (9-3) a 33-0 lead.

Carson advanced to the semifinals to play Crenshaw, in what will be a rematch of last year’s City championship game.

Birmingham (10-2), which scored 53 points in winning its playoff opener against Palisades, ran into a considerably tougher defense against Carson.

The Colts limited Birmingham to 176 total yards and eight first downs.

Kevin McCleary rushed for 108 yards in 18 carries and scored Birmingham’s only touchdown on a two-yard run late in the third quarter.

But Colt running back Trevion Stephens scored on a 63-yard reverse on the next play from scrimmage to increase the Colts’ lead to 39-7.
