SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Mission Viejo High kept the ball on the ground, with Robbie Dubois rushing for 275 yards, en route to a 28-14 victory over Dana Hills in a South Coast League opener Friday night.

The Diablos scored first when quarterback Billy Hart hooked up with receiver Jason Hibbard for a 46-yard touchdown pass with two minutes 36 seconds left in the first quarter.

Dana Hills struck back on the kickoff when Terrell Vinson returned the ball 84 yards for a touchdown.

But that was about all the Dolphins could muster in the first half, as the stifling Diablo defense held their offense to just 18 yards from that point on.

“We’re pretty good at controlling the ball on the ground and that’s basically what we did,” Mission Viejo Coach Bob Johnson said. “It was nice to start off league play with a win.”

Mission Viejo took the lead just before the half when Hart scrambled into the end zone for a touchdown from nine yards to make the score 14-7.

The Diablos extended the lead to 21-7 on their first possession of the second half when Dubois, who carried 29 times, ran 80 yards for a touchdown.

Mission Viejo scored on its next possession when Hart capped a 57-yard drive with a four-yard sneak for a touchdown.

The Dolphins cut the lead to 28-14 early in the fourth quarter when Vinson ran in for a one-yard touchdown.
