Buena Park’s Lopez Comes Up With Tiebreaker in Water Polo

Steve Lopez scored seven goals, including the winner, to lift Buena Park to a 16-15 Freeway League boys’ water polo victory over host Sonora Wednesday.

With an assist from Robby Hegel, who also scored seven times, Lopez broke a 15-15 tie. Goalie Ethan Jessup made 14 saves for Buena Park (16-8, 2-1).

Luigi Riccitelli also had seven times for Sonora (1-2 in league), which rallied with six fourth-quarter goals.

In another Freeway League game:

La Habra 15, Troy 9--Josh Jewett had five goals and Gabe Pacheco had three to spark visiting La Habra (18-7, 3-0), which led, 10-3, at halftime.

Kevin Koskie had five goals for Troy (2-1 in the league).

In the Century League:

No. 2 Villa Park 19, Canyon 7--Charlie Fisher scored eight goals and T.J. Matijevich had five for host Villa Park (18-3, 3-0).

Jonathan Pease had two goals for Canyon (2-1 in the league).

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 14, No. 8 Laguna Beach 10--The Trojans (14-6, 3-0) won despite leading scorer Ted Peck being held to four shots and no goals.

Peter Fyfe had four goals and Kyle Schafer and Nick Chukiat had three each for the Trojans.

Trevor Lyle led all scorers with six goals for Laguna Beach (15-5, 1-2).

In Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country:

Pacifica still unbeaten--Steven Naughton ran Mile Square Park’s three-mile course in 15:19 for the Mariners (4-0), who beat Santiago, 25-34, and defeated La Quinta, 15-48, in a double-dual meet. Rudy Corona finished in 16:02 for Santiago (4-2), which triumphed, 21-23, over La Quinta (2-2).

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Dana Hills 22, No. 7 El Toro 35--Devin Seagal ran O’Neill Regional Park’s three-mile course in 15:45 for the Dolphins (3-0). El Toro is 2-1.

No. 5 Mission 24, Capistrano Valley 35--Dan Fogal ran Laguna Park’s three-mile course in 16:08 for the Diablos (3-0). Mike Beadle (16:13) was second for Capistrano Valley (1-2).

In South Coast League girls’ cross-country:

No. 3 Dana Hills 15, El Toro 48--The undefeated Dolphins (3-0) captured the top five spots in the three-mile run at O’Neill Regional Park.

In Sea View League girls’ golf:

No. 4 Aliso Niguel 118, Laguna Hills 122--The Wolverines (15-1, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the league title as freshman Leisl Hasbrouck shot a season-best one-under 35 at Aliso Viejo Valley course.

In nonleague golf:

No. 7 Corona del Mar 263, Woodbridge 267--Taylor McCormack earned medalist honors with an 85 at par-71 Newport Beach and Strawberry Farms for the Sea Kings (10-4, 6-1).

No. 5 Rosary 120, No. 10 Esperanza 129, Tustin 175--Freshman Jennifer Sander earned medalist honors for Rosary (11-2) with a 37 at Fullerton’s par-33 course.

In Freeway League volleyball:

No. 9 La Habra 3, Buena Park 0--Keao Burdine had a match-high 10 kills for the Highlanders (12-2, 6-0), who won, 15-1, 15-4, 15-2. Buena Park is 0-14, 0-6.
