The Vanguard men’s soccer team has qualified for the Region II playoffs.

Based on a rating system that awards points to teams based on whether they play ranked or unranked teams, Vanguard is seeded fifth for the six-team tournament that starts Wednesday.

The Lions, who finished the regular season 10-4-1, 7-1-1 and second in the Golden State Athletic Conference, will play at Point Loma Nazarene in the first round.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The results of a South Coast League girls’ cross-country meet between El Toro, Capistrano Valley and San Clemente last Thursday were thrown out because race officials failed to order a restart due to a fallen runner.

Freshman Shawn Yourd, a top runner for Capistrano Valley, fell about 100 meters into the three-mile race and remained down for more than 20 seconds. She got up and finished sixth, but the Cougars lost to El Toro by six points.

The coaches agreed to nullify the results from the three-way meet and pull them separately from the league finals meet this Friday.
