This Free Kick Is Costly for Irvine Valley

Daniel Gonzalez had a goal on a free kick nullified midway through the second half as Irvine Valley lost, 2-1, to Santa Barbara Tuesday in Santa Barbara.

Gonzalez converted his free kick for an apparent goal, but the referee called the play dead, saying he hadn’t blown his whistle. The Lazers (3-3-1) also had a shot hit the crossbar in the second half.

Santa Barbara (2-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Pablo Arreola and Chris Parkin. Lee Berry scored three minutes into the second half for the Lazers.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cypress 1, Long Beach City 1--Jose Cruz scored 15 minutes into the game, and Carlos Casillas tied it with 10 minutes left for Long Beach (2-2-2). Goalie Jon Naick made six saves for Cypress (3-1).

Fullerton 8, Oxnard 1--Hector Navarro, Juan Cuellar and Louis Elloie scored two goals each for visiting Fullerton (1-1-3), which led 6-1 at the half.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Oxnard 3, Fullerton 0--Goaltender Danielle Ayala had 15 saves for visiting Fullerton (1-3).

Rio Hondo 3, Golden West 0--Christy Smith scored all three goals for visiting Rio Hondo (3-4). Selina Gonzalez made 10 saves for Golden West (0-5).

In the Cypress men’s water polo tournament:

Santa Monica 9, Cypress 4--Jay Campbell had two goals for the Chargers in their season-opening loss. Santa Monica (1-2) goalkeeper Britt Duenyas stopped 14 Cypress shots.

Rio Hondo 14, Cypress 6--Ian Markstrum scored five goals for Rio Hondo (5-1). Chad Coffman and Jeremy Thacker had two goals apiece for the Chargers (0-2).
