Chaminade Foes Get Dose of Vose

The football education of quarterback Erik Vose is proceeding on schedule, and Chaminade High couldn’t be happier.

Vose, a 6-foot-2 1/2 sophomore, completed 14 of 28 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns Friday in the Eagles’ 42-21 victory over Alemany.

“He’s really blossoming,” first-year Chaminade Coach Bill Culpepper said.

Before snaps, Vose is beginning to read defenses. And after the snap, instead of focusing on the pass rush, he’s starting to see the entire field.

Vose isn’t near where he’ll be by the end of the season in terms of field knowledge.

“Every week, we’re still putting in new plays,” he said.

That’s a warning for opponents. You better beat the Eagles (2-1) now because they are improving fast.

Culpepper is building a dangerous passing attack around Vose with an excellent group of young receivers that includes 6-2 1/2 Josh Jones, a junior who caught nine passes for 166 yards and four touchdowns against the Indians.

Chaminade also may have found a tailback in junior Chris Abichaker, who rushed for 142 yards in 16 carries, including an 89-yard scoring run. Abichaker didn’t play in the opener. He’s among 14 running backs seeking playing time. But Culpepper has been impressed.

“He’s doing a great job,” Culpepper said.

Struggling Thousand Oaks (0-3) received good news last week when strong safety Kevin Rex underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his knee. Rex could return in two to three weeks.

In only its third year of 11-man varsity football, Campbell Hall pulled off the biggest victory in school history by defeating Malibu, 33-28.

The Vikings (2-0), who compete in Division XIII, have put together a productive passing attack that features junior quarterback Matt Kaplan and sophomore receivers Derrick Williams and Justin Green.

“I think there are some bigger wins to come,” Coach Anthony Harris said.

In an effort to improve the play of the offensive line, Hart is moving defensive tackle Jose Flores to offensive tackle.

Quarterback Kyle Matter has been sacked 20 times in the last two games, continuing a rough season for current and former Hart quarterbacks.

David Neill of Nevada has been sacked 24 times in three games. Kyle Boller of California has been sacked eight times, so Matter has company in his misery.

San Fernando (3-0) plays a crucial nonleague game against host Birmingham (3-0) on Thursday night, but the Tigers will be without several injured players.

Sidelined are running back Bobby Stanley (hip) and linebacker Edgar Acosta (ankle). Linebacker Eddie Martinez (strep throat) and defensive end Randy Lang (shoulder) are doubtful.

On the bright side, running back Will German is expected to return after missing the last two games because of a neck injury.
