Running back Tim Gregory of Hart High is expected to have knee surgery on Oct. 12.

Gregory, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season as a sophomore, tore his right anterior cruciate ligament two weeks ago.

Doctors told Gregory to expect a six-to-nine month rehabilitation. However, Gregory, the defending Foothill League 100-meter champion, hopes to return before the end of track season next spring.

“I will if I can,” Gregory said. “But I don’t know how good I’ll be. My main priority is to get back for next football season.”

When Gregory was injured, Hart coaches were on the verge of changing their usually pass-oriented offense into a double-back set, with more of an emphasis on the running game.

“But that plan has obviously changed,” offensive coordinator Dean Herrington said.

In the two games since Gregory’s injury, Hart has rushed for only 51 yards.

Gregory continues to support his teammates. Doing what exactly?

“Being water boy, cheerleader, whatever is needed,” he said.
