Pacifica Rushes to 42-0 Win

Share

Pacifica’s rushing attack was too hot to handle Friday in its Garden Grove League opener and the Mariners ran over Garden Grove, 42-0, at Bolsa Grande High.

Quarterback Jacob Clark ran for touchdowns of 18, seven and six yards on Pacifica’s first three drives as the Mariners built a 20-0 advantage.

Both teams run the option, but Garden Grove (0-3-1, 0-1) never got its attack on track. The Argonauts gained 50 yards to Pacifica’s 239 in the first half.

Chris Wikle hooked up with Chris Naughton on a 17-yard scoring pass just before halftime, giving Pacifica a 28-0 lead.

Pacifica (2-2, 1-0) rushed for 358 yards and held Garden Grove to 74. Javon Smith led the Mariners with 126 yards in 16 carries. Clark rushed for 95 yards and three touchdowns in 13 carries and threw a touchdown pass.

Pacifica’s defense held quarterback Keo Sutherland to minus-two yards rushing and 27 yards passing.

Pacifica Coach Bill Craven said the decisive victory over last year’s league champions shows his team’s potential.

“I don’t know if it’s a message to the league,” he said. “We were just trying to get a message to ourselves.

“We’ve been a little spotty in our performance up until now . . . I think tonight we put a little more emphasis on the option and we’ve kind of settled in with our quarterback situation.”
