Marina Overwhelms Westminster

Share

Marina’s defense forced six turnovers and its offense capitalized on four of them as the Vikings remained undefeated, drubbing Westminster, 41-0, in a nonleague football game Friday night at Westminster High.

All four Viking scores came after Westminster had ventured into Marina territory. On Westminster’s second drive of the game, the Lions reached the Marina 20 before quarterback Fidel Gonzales threw the first of four interceptions. Cornerback Aaron Williams picked off the pass in the end zone.

The Vikings (4-0) took the ball at their own 20 and drove 80 yards in 11 plays. Beau Brown’s 20-yard pass to tight end Matt Nichols gave Marina a 7-0 lead.

Marina scored on its next two possessions, helped by two big plays. The first was Bernard Mitchell’s 61-yard run down the sidelines that set up Adam Hayward’s six-yard blast into the end zone. The second was a 29-yard reverse by Turill Engelman. On the next play, Brown rolled to his right and threw against the grain to Mitchell, who sprinted 37 yards for a 21-0 Marina halftime lead.

The Vikings forced Westminster (0-3-1) into three turnovers in the second half. Westminster had 47 yards in total offense in the second half. Marina sealed the outcome on the second play of the second half when Hayward scored on a 65-yard run.
