De Vera, Nguyen Advance to City Tennis Singles Final

Judith De Vera of Carson and Jessica Nguyen of Granada Hills advanced to the City Section individual singles tennis final with victories in the semifinals Friday at Balboa Sports Center.

Top-seeded De Vera defeated fourth-seeded Yu Yu Myinttun of Fairfax, 6-2, 6-1, and second-seeded Nguyen beat third-seeded Christine Dao, also from Granada Hills, 6-2, 7-6 (0).

The top-seeded individual doubles team of Marissa Lin and Jennifer Lin of Palisades defeated fifth-seeded Cielo Domingo and Kim Espiritu of Carson, 6-1, 6-2. The third-seeded team of Kay Lozano and Maria Domingo beat the second-seeded team of Bianca Valenti and Madison Sellers of Palisades, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

The finals will be held is Monday at Balboa Sports Center.

In boys’ basketball:

Westchester 105, Compton Dominguez 54--Scott Cutley had 20 points for Westchester (3-0), the No. 1 team in The Times’ rankings, in the semifinals of the Westchester tournament. Keion Kindred had 19 points for Dominguez (3-5). Westchester will play No. 4 Fairfax (7-0), an 86-60 winner over San Diego Horizon in the other semifinal.

Pomona Diamond Ranch 69, Claremont 63--Richard Coombs had 17 points to help Diamond Ranch (3-1) upset No. 18 Claremont for third place in the San Dimas tournament.

Los Angeles Loyola 71, Los Angeles Price 52--Omar Wilkes scored 18 points as the Lions (6-0) beat No. 25 Price (6-1) in the semifinals of the El Segundo tournament.

In girls’ water polo:

Newport Harbor 12, Long Beach Wilson 8--Katherine Belden had four goals and Jessica Ball three to lead No. 5 Newport Harbor (1-0) in a nonleague game at home. Amy Lamb and Lauren Silver each had three goals for No. 6 Wilson (1-2).
