Booker, Dennis Top State Team

Running backs Lorenzo Booker of Ventura St. Bonaventure and Hershel Dennis of Long Beach Poly head the list of Southland football players selected all-state by Cal-Hi magazine.

Other first-team offensive players: receiver Dante Bogan of Santa Barbara, lineman Robert Chai of Newport Harbor, lineman John Parada of Alta Loma, lineman Ryan Parks of Chino, receiver Steve Smith of Woodland Hills Taft and kicker Adrian Rosales of West Covina South Hills.

First-team defensive players include: back Darnell Bing of Long Beach Poly, back Marques Binns of L.A. Dorsey, punter Chris Davis of Oxnard Rio Mesa, linebacker Scott Garrison of San Luis Obispo, back A.J. Martinez of Huntington Beach Edison, linebacker Ryan Powdrell of Mission Viejo, lineman Tim Volk of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and lineman Manuel Wright of Long Beach Poly.

Other first-team honors went to La Quinta running back Frederick Collins, La Palma Kennedy receiver, quarterback and defensive back Rhema McKnight and Hart quarterback Matt Moore as multi-purpose players.

Cal-Hi selected players of the year at various positions and classes. Booker was running back of the year; Smith was receiver of the year and junior of the year; Rosales was kicker of the year; Collins medium-schools player of the year, and Damon Morton of Riverside North was sophomore of the year. Derek Landri of Concord De La Salle was player of the year and lineman of the year.

Bob Johnson, who guided Mission Viejo to the Southern Section Division II football title in his third season, was chosen state large-school coach of the year.

Also selected coaches of the year were Dan Finfrock from Redlands Arrowhead Christian (small schools) and Butch Cattolico of Los Gatos (medium schools). Arrowhead Christian won the Southern Section Division XIII title.
