Brea Olinda Girls Finish Strong in Win

Lauren Pederson of Brea Olinda scored 12 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Wildcats to a 55-46 victory over Bishop Verot (Fla.) on Wednesday in a first-round game of the Florida Palms Classic girls’ basketball tournament in Fort Myers.

Brea Olinda, (5-3) trailed Bishop Verot (12-1) by six points at halftime before rallying against the top-ranked Division III team in Florida.

Brea Olinda is ninth in The Times’ rankings.

Harbor City Narbonne 75, Berkmar (Ga.) 39--Wilnett Crocket had 15 points and eight rebounds for the second-ranked Gauchos (7-2) in a first-round game of the Atlanta Peach State Classic at Morehouse University.

Burbank 77, San Diego Lincoln 53--Christine Kepenekian scored 40 points--making 21 of 28 free throws--for Burbank (6-3) in the first-round game of the Santee Santana tournament.

In boys’ basketball:

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 68, San Diego Christian 67--Matt Sweany made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to lift 20th-ranked Capistrano Valley (9-3) in the nonleague game held in conjunction with the San Diego Torrey Pines tournament.

Pete deCasas of Capistrano Valley scored 30 points, including 16 in the third quarter when the Cougars took the lead. Sweaney had 16 points.

Los Angeles Loyola 90, Compton Dominguez 69--Omar Wilkes scored 21 points and Vince Oliver had 16 to help the 14th-ranked Cubs (10-0) to victory in the first-round national division game of the San Diego Torrey Pines tournament.

El Segundo 60, Fresno San Joaquin Memorial 56--El Segundo went on a 13-4 run to end the first-round game of the Bakersfield Garces tournament.

Dashawn Strong had 30 points and 13 rebounds for 18th-ranked El Segundo (9-1).

Monrovia 52, Claremont 51--Steffon Barron’s free throw with less than a second left gave the Wildcats the upset victory in pool play of the Brea Olinda tournament. Bryant Markson had 22 points and eight rebounds for Monrovia (5-6).

Claremont, ranked 23rd, is 9-4.

Corona Centennial 64, Huntington Beach 54--

J.R. Reese scored 24 points to lead the eighth-ranked Huskies (9-1) to victory in a first-round game of the Orange tournament at Chapman College.
