If a brave man is willing to stare death in the face once, what does that make Lakewood Mayfair Coach David Breig?

Breig predicted his Monsoons would defeat Santa Ana Mater Dei in Monday’s Dream Classic at Loyola Marymount. Then, after the Monarchs dismantled Mayfair, 73-48, Breig said his team would defeat Mater Dei in a rematch.

“I’ll take my guys against anyone,” Breig said after his team shot only 34.6% from the floor and failed to match up against Mater Dei center Jamal Sampson. “As a coach, you have to have confidence. I don’t regret [predicting] anything.”

Sampson, who finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds in his first game against childhood friend Josh Childress, said the Monarchs laughed at Breig’s first prediction, which appeared in a local newspaper.

The Stanford-bound Childress finished with a game-high 20 points, including an NBA-range three-point basket and a 360-degree dunk, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Monarchs’ inside game and fast-breaking, opportunistic play.

UCLA-bound guard Cedric Bozeman had 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Mater Dei (18-2), which built a 43-25 lead early in the third quarter before Mayfair (13-3) trimmed the deficit to 50-36 heading into the fourth.
