Simi Valley Takes Hold of Its First Marmonte Title Since 1997

Simi Valley High clinched its first Marmonte League wrestling title since 1997, defeating Agoura, 47-12, on Thursday night at Agoura.
The Pioneers (5-0, 5-0 in league matches) received pins from heavyweight Dan Kunkes and 152-pounder Derek Saenz.
“They were a lot more hyped up than we were,” Kunkes said. “But I think we came out and wrestled smarter and more intense.”
Kunkes, who improved to 22-2 with 15 pins, pinned Jonathan Ford in 3:15.
Saenz, a sophomore, pinned Jesse Ruf in 1:32.
Simi Valley, ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times, won three of the first four matches and dominated the upper weights, taking the final four bouts.
John Monroe took a 9-7 decision from Mike Williams of Agoura at 171 pounds and John Whitlock followed with a 7-6 decision over Ted Gooch at 189.
Agoura, the defending co-champion with Thousand Oaks, got victories from Augie Gatto at 130 and Casey King at 119.
In another wrestling match:
Thousand Oaks 51, Royal 21--The Lancers (15-8-1, 3-1-1) won nine of the first 11 weight classes in a Marmonte League victory at Royal.
Will Velasquez (7-1), who hadn’t competed since Dec. 9 because of an undisclosed injury, pinned Josh Jones of Royal in 2:42 at 152 pounds.
Jones (19-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, narrowly missing a pin. Velasquez, a returning Times all-region selection, rallied for a 5-5 tie at the end of the first period, then put Jones on his back at the start of the second.
Kevin Kemp (24-5) pinned Mike Goldstein in 1:30 at 125 pounds. Kemp has 21 pins.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley 82, Cerro Coso 68--Jimmy White made two three-pointers to fuel a 22-6 run in the last seven minutes and lead the Marauders in a Foothill Conference victory at Cerro Coso.
Roger Price had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and White scored with 22 points for Antelope Valley (12-11, 5-1), which made 74% of its shots in the second half.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley 74, Cerro Coso 35--Kristel Jones had 24 points and four steals for the Marauders (12-11, 3-3), which held Cerro Coso without a field goal for 13 minutes at one point in a Foothill Conference game at Antelope Valley.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Cleveland 1, Chatsworth 0--Alberto Garcia scored with under four minutes remaining in a West Valley League game at Cleveland (9-6-2, 3-2-1).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hueneme 2, Oxnard 1--Elizabeth Vasquez scored to lift the Vikings (10-5-2, 2-3) to their first-ever victory over Oxnard (5-5-3, 3-1-1) in a Pacific View League game at Hueneme.
Chatsworth 8, Cleveland 0--Jenna Fodor and Lindsey Redlin each scored three goals, and Fodor had four assists, in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth.
Michelle Mohiles and Berenice Vasquez contributed first-half goals for the Chancellors, who led, 5-0, at halftime.
