The No. 2-seeded Westlake High boys’ tennis team hung on for a victory over unseeded Mira Costa on games in a Southern Section Division III quarterfinal playoff Tuesday at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.
The Warriors (18-0), defending division champions, extended their winning streak to 39 matches, but not before being extended in a 9-9 tie that they won on games, 81-77, despite dropping the last singles set and the last doubles set.
Mira Costa’s No. 3 singles player, Ashton Politanoff, defeated No. 2 Matt Pardee, 6-4, and Mira Costa’s No. 1 doubles team of Ryan Pfeifle and Addison Allen defeated the No. 3 team of Deep Ganguli and Chalmers Wang, 7-5, to wipe out a 9-7 Westlake lead.
The doubles sets proved to be the difference for the Warriors.
The Warriors won 48 of 86 doubles games, overcoming Mira Costa’s strength in singles, where the Mustangs (16-6) won 39 of 72 games.
