HIGH SCHOOL NOTES

The City Section track and field championships will be held tonight at Birmingham High.

The top three finishers in each event qualify for the state meet June 1-2 in Sacramento. Individuals or relay teams that finish fourth or lower also will advance if they equal or exceed specific standards in their particular events.

The Southern Section Masters meet is Friday night at Cerritos College. The top five finishers in each event qualify for the state meet. Individuals or relay teams that finish sixth or lower also will advance if they equal or exceed specific standards.

Chatsworth (27-2) is the top-seeded team for the City Section baseball playoffs that begin with first-round games Friday. Granada Hills Kennedy (21-10) is seeded second, South Gate (23-7) third and Wilmington Banning (20-11) fourth.

Southern Section boys’ volleyball finals will be played Saturday at Cypress College in two gyms.

The schedule: Division III--1 p.m.; Division IV--1:30 p.m.; Division II--4 p.m.; Division V--4:30 p.m.; and Division I--7 p.m.

Southern Section softball quarterfinals will be played today, baseball quarterfinals Friday.

The Division I baseball semifinals are Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach at 4 p.m. and 7.

The Southern Section boys’ tennis individual finals are Saturday at Seacliff Tennis Club in Huntington Beach. Team finals are Wednesday at the Claremont Tennis Club.

The City Section individual finals are Wednesday at Balboa Sports Center.
