Santin First in Heat of Hurdles in 57.02

Frances Santin of Cal State Northridge won her qualifying heat of the women’s 400-meter low hurdles Wednesday in the NCAA track and field championships at the University of Oregon.

Santin, a junior from Taft High, ran 57.02 to advance to Friday’s final with the third-best qualifying time.

Junior Steve L’Amoure of Northridge will compete in the men’s hammer throw today. Sophomore Dee Scott is in the women’s triple jump on Friday and sophomore Carol Stevenson is entered in the women’s hammer on Saturday.

Volleyball

Bryan Capper and Masood Noorzay, who helped Taft High to three consecutive City Section championships, have been selected City players of the year.

All-City selections include Inshik Shin, a senior opposite hitter for Taft, senior setter Nino Loqellano and senior middle blocker Mike Charleston of Grant, junior opposite hitter Oscar Avelar of Monroe and junior setter Paul George of Chatsworth.

Baseball

Pitcher Bobby Paschal of Chaminade High has been selected player of the year in the Mission League and teammate Sean Clark was chosen pitcher of the year.

The juniors led Chaminade to a 12-0 league record, the first time a Mission team has gone unbeaten in league play since Crespi in 1993.

Catcher Phil Avlas of Kennedy and pitcher Abraham Gonzalez of San Fernando have been selected co-players of the year in the Valley Mission League.

Pitcher Joe Hampel of Poly and catcher DJ Lewis of North Hollywood have been chosen co-players of the year in the Sunset Six League.

Curtis Scott has resigned after six seasons as coach at Newbury Park to pursue other coaching opportunities.

Jim Neer has resigned after one season at Van Nuys.

David Muskrath has been appointed coach at Monroe. He served as an assistant to Fred Pudrith, who resigned.

Barry Matthews, a former Crespi High and Pierce College pitcher, has signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers.

Softball

Christina Lupacchini of Chaminade was selected pitcher of the year and Amanda De La Cerda of Notre Dame was selected player of the year in the Mission League.

Soccer

Jim Sharp, an All-Southern Section football and soccer player at Notre Dame High, has decided to play soccer for UC Santa Barbara.
