Deputy Injured in Crash Emerging From Coma
An Orange County sheriff’s deputy critically injured in an auto accident last month is slowly recovering, authorities said.
Deputy Mike Gaard’s left arm was crushed, and he suffered swelling of the brain, as well as other injuries in the crash, which occurred while he was responding to a drive-by shooting in San Clemente.
The Sheriff’s Department said this week Gaard is beginning to emerge from a coma, but still cannot speak.
