Second Effort Earns Ventura a Title

Ventura was held scoreless in the first half Saturday, but rallied to defeat Lompoc Cabrillo, 6-2, in the championship game of the Oxnard girls’ water polo tournament at Oxnard High.

The Cougars (18-4) trailed, 2-0, before Dolores Johnson scored early in third quarter, the first of her team-high two goals. Elizabeth Derse, the tournament most valuable player, had eight steals and a goal, and Amy Simpson, Solange Webster and Heather Bird added goals for Ventura, which came into the week ranked third in Southern Section Division II. Cabrillo is ranked eighth in Division II.

Ventura, which Tuesday ended Santa Barbara’s 37-game winning streak in the Channel League, reached the final with a 7-1 semifinal victory over Temple City earlier Saturday.

Corona del Mar 13, Carlsbad 11--Christina Hewko had five goals and Brittney Bowlus had four for No. 6 Corona del Mar in the nonleague game at Corona del Mar High. The scored was tied, 9-9, after three periods. Jessica Wells stopped 10 shots for the Sea Kings. Carlsbad is the three-time San Diego Section Division I champions.

In boys’ soccer:

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 5, San Clemente 0--Jesse Dunn and Matt Jonhson each scored two goals for Capistrano Valley (13-4-3, 3-2-2). Goalies Sean Forster, Jared Bentley and Andrew Cartone combined for 18 saves and the team’s first shutout.
