Cassell Leads Chatsworth, 5-0

Junior right-hander Justin Cassel threw his second consecutive shutout, yielding only three hits and striking out seven, to lead Chatsworth to a 5-0 victory over Saugus in the Red Division championship game of the Westside baseball tournament at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Jared Halpert contributed three hits and Brian Lee had an RBI triple for Chatsworth (5-0), ranked No. 3 by The Times. Saugus dropped to 4-1.

Also in the Westside tournament, Ryan Burke had two doubles and a triple and Sergio Almanzar and Eric Ashbrook each hit home runs to help Canyon (5-0) to a 9-4 victory over Newbury Park (4-1) in the Blue Division title game.... J.D. McCauley and Brett Carlin each hit homers for No. 6 Placentia El Dorado (3-2) in a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Huntington Beach Edison (3-2) in a consolation game of the Loara tournament.... Tyler Morrison’s home run in the seventh gave Glendora (3-1) a 1-0 victory in the title game of its own tournament over Crescenta Valley (3-1). Brandon Villalobos threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
