Santa Margarita Wins It With a Wood

Share

Taylor Wood, a USC-bound senior, shot four-under-par 68 to lead Santa Margarita to the Southern Section Southern Divisional title Monday at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.

Steve Harward shot 73 and twins Jeff and Steve Bullock had matching 74s for the Eagles, ranked No. 3 by The Times, but the real surprise was Long Beach Poly, which shot 377 and finished second. The top two teams advance to the section finals Thursday at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc.

Poly’s golf team is the only team at the school that has not won a league or section title in the last 22 years. The Jackrabbits had not beaten rival Long Beach Wilson since 1999, but, led by a 69 from senior Jeffrey Hastings Monday, finished four shots ahead of the Bruins for a berth in the section finals. Wilson is ranked No. 2 by The Times.

“It’s a good start,” said Wood, who had three birdies and an eagle. “But we can go lower.”

In boys’ tennis:

Ball sidelined--Corona del Mar senior Cameron Ball, the top-seeded singles player in the Pacific Coast League’s individual tournament, did not play in the opening round because of an inner-ear infection, Coach Tim Mang said, and will be ineligible to compete for the Southern Section singles title.

Winners and runners-up in each league singles and doubles tournament advance to the section’s individual tournament.
