University Tennis Looks to Repeat

Irvine University (19-2-1), the two-time defending Southern Section Division II boys’ tennis champion, has been seeded No. 1 for the playoffs. First-round matches are scheduled to begin Tuesday. The finals are May 29 at Claremont Tennis Club.

Anaheim Servite (17-2) and Corona del Mar (19-2), the top-seeded teams in Divisions IV and V, respectively, will each be attempting to win consecutive championships. Westlake (19-0), which has been to a division final each of the last five seasons, winning in 2000, is top-seeded in Division III.

In Southern Section boys’ volleyball, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (23-1), the No. 1 team in The Times’ rankings, is seeded first in Division II. First-round playoffs begin on Friday. The finals are May 25 at Cypress College. Other top-seeded teams: Anaheim Esperanza in Division I, Santa Barbara San Marcos in Division III, Santa Ynez in Division IV and Brentwood in Division V.

In Southern Section badminton, defending champion Villa Park is seeded No. 1 for the team playoffs, which begin on Tuesday.
