David Yoon of Irvine Woodbridge High had seven birdies, including four in a row on holes seven through 10, and shot three-under-par 69 on Thursday to win the Southern Section Southern Regional individual boys’ golf qualifying tournament at Coto de Caza Golf and Country Club.

Taylor Wood of Santa Margarita shot 70 to finish second. Yoon and Wood were the only players to break par on a difficult course, which was used as a replacement for Tijeras Creek Golf Club. The tournament was postponed Monday because of a fire in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Yoon, a junior from South Korea in his first year at Woodbridge, was five under par at one point, but made a double bogey at No. 17. He made up for it with a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18.

In boys’ tennis:

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 14, Temecula Valley 4--The third-seeded Cougars spoiled the return of Temecula Valley Coach Kerry Leander with their second-round victory in the Division I playoff at Capistrano Valley High.

Leander led the Capistrano Valley girls’ program to 10 playoff berths from 1987-98, including four semifinal appearances and one trip to the finals in 1998, the season he earned The Times’ Orange County coach of the year honors. His boys’ teams also made the playoffs three times from 1993-99.

Leander, who moved to Temecula for more affordable housing, returned to coaching this season, leading the Golden Bears (19-3) to the Southwestern League title. Entering Thursday’s match, he predicted Temecula Valley would be a long way from playing to Capistrano Valley’s level.

“When I was coaching at Capistrano Valley, we used to be the No. 3 team in league and would draw a team from Riverside in the first round,” he said. “They would have a great record, like us, but the match would never be close.”

Capistrano Valley (17-2) was led by Logan Johnson in singles and the doubles team of Chad Wallace and Ajay Ahluwalia, who swept at 6-0 in three sets.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 10, Placentia El Dorado 8--Kaes Van’t Hof defeated Sergiu Modoc, 6-3, to cap a three-set sweep at No. 2 singles for Mater Dei (16-4), which upset El Dorado (19-3) in a Southern Section Division II second-round match at El Dorado. Mater Dei’s No. 3 team of John Plou and Wes Burrows also swept three sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, to help the Monarchs win seven of nine in doubles.
