Young Homers to Lift Camarillo, 3-2

Unable to hit a curveball during his first three at-bats, Delmon Young connected on an 0-2 curveball in the eighth inning, sending it far over the left-field fence to give top-seeded Camarillo a 3-2 victory over host Rialto Eisenhower on Tuesday in a Southern Section Division I second-round playoff game.

“Thank god that’s over,” said Young, whose 16th home run of the season landed across the street.

Eisenhower pitchers Jose Pagan and Jesse Iglesias had neutralized Young. He struck out in the first inning, grounded out with two runners aboard in the third and flied out with the bases loaded in the fifth. Then came the towering home run.

“That ball just carried,” said Camarillo shortstop Brad Boyer.

Travis Sutton (13-0) pitched 21/3 innings of one-hit relief for Camarillo (27-4), The Times’ No. 3-ranked team. Sutton hit a home run in the seventh inning to give the Scorpions a 2-1 lead. Eisenhower (19-10) tied the score when Boyer slipped trying to field a routine ground ball.

“We almost lost the game a couple of times and we almost won the game a couple of times,” said Young.

Camarillo plays Palos Verdes Peninsula in a quarterfinal Friday.
