A 14-year-old football player collapsed and briefly lost consciousness Thursday during a freshman-sophomore game at Encino Crespi.
The player was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where a spokesman said he was in fair and stable condition.
The 235-pound teenager had been involved in some plays when he grabbed his chest and fell to the ground, a spokesman for the L.A. Fire Dept. said. Paramedics reported the player, who was unconscious for about two minutes, later complained of shortness of breath, back pain and abdominal pain.
Childrens Hospital planned to keep the player overnight for observation. The cause of the problem is undetermined.
A spokesman said X-rays showed no damage to the head or chest.

Al Bennett, boys’ basketball coach at Lake Balboa Birmingham High for 13 years, has resigned and will be replaced on an interim basis by freshman-sophomore coach Joel Thornburgh.
Bennett guided the Patriots to lower division City final appearances in 1995 and 1998. He has been under scrutiny because 11 Birmingham players have transferred in the last two years.

The Foot Locker national cross-country championships will return to San Diego’s Morley Field on Dec. 14 after being held in Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex at Orlando, Fla., the last five years.
The national championships were held at Morley Field during its first two years of existence in 1979 and 1980 before being contested in Orlando in 1981 and 1982. The meet returned to Morley Field in 1983 and was held there annually until 1997.
The top eight boys’ and girls’ finishers from four regional championships advance to the national championships.
