Mater Dei Slips Past North

Senior wide receiver Corey Boudreaux wrested a pass away from defensive back Joseph Paredes for an 80-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter to help Santa Ana Mater Dei rally for a 16-13 victory over Riverside North at Santa Ana Stadium on Thursday night.

Boudreaux caught the pass from sophomore quarterback Jason Forcier at the North 38 and ran untouched into the end zone after Paredes fell down while trying to strip the ball.

The Monarchs, No. 17 in The Times’ rankings, were coming off a 21-19 loss to Mission Viejo.

“We both went for it up in the air,” said Boudreaux, who also intercepted a pass deep in Mater Dei territory in the first quarter. “He tried to rip it out and I was able to twist it out.”

Running back Josh Barnett had given North (1-2), once ranked as high as No. 9, a 13-9 lead early in the third quarter when he took a pitch from quarterback Dion Morton and ran 21 yards for a touchdown. Barnett also scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter and finished with 136 yards in 29 carries.

Rafael Rice, who scored on a 14-yard pass from Forcier in the second quarter, had his first 100-yard game of the season, rushing for 106 in 23 carries.

After Boudreaux’s decisive touchdown, North moved the ball no farther than the Mater Dei 43. North kicker Zack Romero missed field-goal attempts of 47 and 37 yards.

Los Alamitos 24, Bellflower St. John Bosco 14--The Griffins broke open a tight game by converting three turnovers into 17 second-half points and a victory at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Defensive back Antoine Cason intercepted a long pass by St. John Bosco quarterback Joseph Souza on the Braves’ first possession of the second half and Kevin Gamarnik kicked a 40-yard field goal on the ensuing drive to give the Griffins a 10-7 lead.

After Christopher Cheri recovered a Souza fumble, Los Alamitos (2-0-1) drove 47 yards in five plays, capped by Ryan Bagley’s 10-yard run that increased the Griffins’ lead to 17-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Linebacker Gregory Johnson intercepted two passes for Los Alamitos. He returned one 30 yards to set up a three-yard touchdown run by Bagley with 4:06 left. .

Brandon Tripp caught seven passes for 85 yards and Jeremy Childs had seven receptions for 80 yards for Los Alamitos.

Derrick Williams rushed for 131 yards in 15 carries and had four receptions for 40 yards for St. John Bosco (1-2). Michael Chowtham had six receptions for 100 yards, among them a nine-yard touchdown pass from Souza with 1:25 remaining.

Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula 28, Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe 6--Jordan Munde rushed for 204 yards in 27 carries and scored three touchdowns for Peninsula at Whittier Pioneer High.

Munde’s best run came just before halftime on a play that was designed to run out the clock. With 12 seconds left and Peninsula (2-1) holding a 7-3 lead, Munde took a pitchout and turned the corner for a 68-yard touchdown run.

Santa Fe (2-1), the top-ranked team in Division VII, cut the lead to 14-6 on a 31-yard field goal by Art Reyes midway through the third quarter, but Munde carried nine times on the ensuing drive and scored on a one-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for a 21-6 lead.

John Disbro then put the game out of reach, returning Peninsula’s third interception of the game 27 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers, a Division III team, missed the playoffs for the first time last season.
