Miami will host Latin Grammys

After years of conflicts over Cuban politics, the fourth annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony will be held for the first time this year in Miami, the often contentious city that has vied to host the event from its inception.

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences is expected to announce today that the show, to be telecast nationally by CBS, is scheduled to take place Sept. 3 at Miami’s American Airlines Arena.

That was the intended site of the ceremony in 2001 until the threat of anti-Castro protests compelled organizers to move the program back to Los Angeles, where it had debuted the year before at Staples Center.

At the time, Michael Greene, the then-president of the recording academy who spearheaded the Latin spinoff of the Grammys, said the show would not be held in Miami until the city’s political climate had changed. This year, with new leadership at both Miami’s City Hall and the academy, the impasse was resolved.
