Joel Sanchez will return to his alma mater to coach the El Monte football team, replacing Eric Martinez, who resigned earlier this year after one season.

Sanchez, 23, was a linebacker on Azusa Pacific’s 1998 NAIA national championship team. He was an assistant coach at Baldwin Park Sierra Vista last season. He will be the Lions’ third coach in four years.

Bob Erbst resigned as boys’ basketball coach at Chino Hills Ayala after one season, citing philosophical differences with the school administration.

Erbst, who will remain at the school as a teacher, replaced Tom Gregory last June but was unable to continue Gregory’s 12-year run of success with the Bulldogs. Ayala went 12-15, ending a 10-year streak of 20-win seasons. The Bulldogs’ first-round loss in the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs ended a 10-year streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals.

D.J. Mackinnon has resigned as football coach at El Monte Arroyo after 23 seasons so that he can watch his son, Kyle, a freshman quarterback and defensive back at Walnut.

Defensive coordinator Jim Singiser, who has been an assistant since 1994, will replace Mackinnon. Under Singiser, the Knights gave up 10.7 points a game last season when they won the Mission Valley League title for the eighth time in 10 seasons.

Mackinnon won a Southern Section championship in 1986 and led the Knights to more than 170 victories.

Bruce Victor has resigned as Ontario Chaffey boys’ basketball coach after one season in which the Tigers finished 5-19, 3-5 in the Mount Baldy League.

Victor came to Chaffey after serving as coach at Victor Valley College. He will coach at Life Pacific College in San Dimas next season.

Jennings would replace Dave Anderson, an interim coach at Hemet this season who took over after the resignation of longtime coach Alex Boyd.

Mark Hill, former men’s basketball coach at Orange Coast College, has been named boys’ basketball coach at Laguna Beach High. Hill replaces Rob Cullinan, the Artists’ coach the past two seasons. Hill was boys’ basketball coach at Anaheim Esperanza from 1988 to ’96 and was an assistant at Anaheim Canyon last season.
