EXTRA BASES

HIGHLIGHTS

* Brittany Throckmorton had six hits, including a grand slam, for L.A. Pacific Christian in a 20-14 victory over L.A. Archer. She finished with 11 runs batted in, the sixth-highest total in Southern Section history. The record is 14, shared by Beth Freeman of North Hollywood Oakwood in 1982 and Nikki Greer of Bermuda Dunes Desert Christian in 1989.

* Jessica Navarro of South Gate gave up one hit and struck out 27 over 14 innings in same-day victories over L.A. Lincoln, 2-1, and Long Beach Jordan, 9-0.

NOTABLE

* Anaheim Canyon, after a 6-7 start, returned to the top 25 by winning its last nine games. Twice in that streak the Comanches beat The Times’ No. 4 team -- Anaheim Esperanza, 4-3, three weeks ago and Orange El Modena, 3-0, last week.

* Corona Santiago sophomore Taryne Mowatt retired 21 batters in a row, but it wasn’t enough to be a perfect game. Mowatt threw a one-hitter in an eight-inning, 1-0 victory over Riverside La Sierra that ended when she drew a bases-loaded walk.

* Moreno Valley was a surprise this season, sitting atop the Ivy League with victories over Riverside Poly and Moreno Valley Canyon Springs. Poly pitcher Mindy Cowles prevented Moreno Valley from turning the league race into a rout by pitching a three-hitter and hitting a two-run homer to beat the Vikings, 3-0.

ON DECK

* The game of the week takes place today at Corona, where the sixth-ranked Panthers -- fresh from taking No. 2 Garden Grove Pacifica to the wire in a 1-0 loss -- play host to No. 1 Corona Santiago. A Santiago win virtually assures the Sharks of the Mountain View League title.
