Golfers Team Up for West

La Mirada’s Daniel Im and Long Beach’s Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana, The Times’ boy and girl golfers of the year, lead the West in the 14th American Junior Golf Assn. Canon Cup today through Thursday at Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga.

The Canon Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition that pits the top 10 boys and girls from the Western United States against their Eastern counterparts.

In addition to Im, who will be a senior at La Mirada High this fall, also playing for the West are Seung Su Han, the AJGA boys’ player of the year in 2002 and a junior at Chino Hills Ayala, and Anthony Kim, who graduated from La Quinta in June and will attend Oklahoma.

Tangtiphaiboontana, who graduated from Long Beach Wilson in June and will attend Stanford, will be joined on the West team by Aime Cochran, a senior at West Torrance; Angela Park, a sophomore at Torrance; and Jennie Lee, a junior at Huntington Beach Marina.

Lionel Larry, the California Interscholastic Federation state champion in the 200-meter dash, finished second in the 200 in the young men’s division (ages 17-18) as the Junior Olympics concluded over the weekend at Miami.

Larry, who will be a senior at Compton Dominguez this fall, was competing for the Imani Track Club of Lynwood. He finished in 21.46 seconds. Jason Craig of the Northwest Track Club of Olympia, Wash., finished first in 21.11.

Craig Woods, a graduate of Dominguez who also competes for Imani, finished seventh in the 400 hurdles in 57.46.

The Imani relay team of Derrick Jones and Rodney Van, both seniors at Long Beach Poly; Omari Hinkson of Dominguez; and Larry finished eighth in the 1,600 relay in 3:16.60.

Jasmine Baldwin, who competes for the Southern California Cheetahs based in Walnut and is a senior at La Puente Bishop Amat, finished third in the 100 in 12.02 and fourth in the 200 in 23.97.

Drayanna Adams, a graduate of Paso Robles who competes for San Luis Obispo, finished 10th in discus with a throw of 122 feet 4 inches.

In the intermediate girls’ competition (ages 15-16), Dominique Manning, a Riverside North senior who competes for the West Valley Eagles of Canoga Park, finished first in the 100 hurdles in 14.19, and Nashay Trice, a sophomore at Pasadena Muir who competes for the Pasadena Running Roses, finished fifth in discus (132-10) and ninth in javelin (108-8).

In the youth competition (ages 13-14), Isaiah Green of Los Angeles’ Southern California Running finished first in the boys’ 100 in 11.17 and second in the 200 in 22.27; Bryson Nellum of Southern California Running finished first in the boys’ 400 in 49.20 and sixth in the 200 in 22.67, and Ebony Collins of Hawthorne’s Quiet Fire finished second in the girls’ 400 in 54.08.

The Quiet Fire team of Collins, Sheline Williams, Christina Black and D’Ambour Lewis won both girls’ relay events, finishing the 400 in 47.31 and the 1,600 in 3:47.02.

The Southern California Running team of Raymond Carter, Nellum, Green and Kemonte Bateman finished second in the boys’ 1,600 relay in 3:29.80, and the team of Green, Ramon Judkins, Christopher Faulknor and Nellum finished third in the 400 relay in 44.32.

The Santa Barbara-based Paradise girls’ water polo club defeated San Diego Shores, 5-3, Sunday in the girls’ 18-under final of the National Junior Olympics at Lake Forest El Toro High.

Santa Barbara’s Molly Cahill had one goal and Newport Harbor’s Jenna Murphy scored two for Paradise. The teammates will be freshmen at UCLA this fall.

The men’s 20-under water polo nationals begin today and continue through Wednesday at UC Santa Cruz, followed by the men’s nationals, also at Santa Cruz, Thursday through Sunday.
