Sheriff Obtains Arrest Warrant in Fatal 1980 Stanton Shooting

Orange County sheriff’s investigators said Wednesday that they have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a suspect in a fatal shooting in Stanton 23 years ago.

Clemente Sanchez, now 44, is being sought in the 1980 death of fellow laborer Felipe Raymundo, then 24, whose body was found near Pacific and Fern streets, according to a statement released by the sheriff’s office. “Forensic and other evidence links the suspect to the victim’s murder,” the statement says.

The case, initially investigated by the Stanton Police Department, was inherited by the Sheriff’s Department when it was contracted to provide police services for Stanton in 1988. Although the district attorney’s office initially declined to file charges, the statement said, it reversed that decision more recently following “additional work” by the Sheriff’s Department.
