Mets Catch Mariners at Right Time

Rookie Jae Seo and the New York Mets lured the streaking Seattle Mariners into a tight, National League type of game at a National League park.

So long, streak.

Cliff Floyd and Jason Phillips homered as the Mets broke Seattle’s nine-game winning streak, beating the Mariners, 3-2, Friday night at New York behind a fine pitching effort from Seo.

“All good things come to an end,” Mariner Manager Bob Melvin said. “Start another one tomorrow.”

In the first meeting between the teams, the Mets stopped Seattle’s 13-game road winning streak. The Mariners had posted the longest single-season run on the road in the majors since Detroit took 17 in a row in 1984.

“We won, I’m glad of that,” Met Manager Art Howe said. “But you don’t want to play these guys all season.”

Seo (3-2) held the Mariners to an unearned run until the eighth. Reliever David Weathers gave up Ben Davis’ RBI groundout that made it 3-2 and retired pinch-hitter Edgar Martinez on a grounder to end the inning.

New York Yankees 5, Chicago Cubs 3 -- Jason Giambi had three runs batted in to back David Wells, and the Yankees beat the Cubs in their first game at Wrigley Field since the 1938 World Series.

Wrigley Field and the adjacent rooftops were jammed, and there was a loud contingent of New York fans chanting “Let’s Go Yankees!” The crowd was announced at 39,359, the second-largest this season.

The Yankees had been to Wrigley on only two previous trips, going a combined 4-0 in the World Series in 1932 and 1938.

Oakland 7, Philadelphia 4 -- Miguel Tejada broke out of a slump by tying a career high with four hits and driving in three runs, and Barry Zito took a one-hitter into the sixth inning as the Athletics returned to Philadelphia for the first time since they left after the 1954 season.

The Philadelphia Athletics joined the American League in 1901. They moved to Kansas City in 1955 and went to Oakland in 1968. The A’s never played the Phillies before Friday.

Tejada, who had one hit in his last 15 at-bats, tied an Oakland record with three doubles. Eric Chavez drove in three runs for the A’s.

Montreal 13, Texas 10 -- Brian Schneider drove in a career-high five runs with a homer and a three-run double at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Expos handed the Rangers their season-high seventh straight loss.

A sellout crowd of 18,005 -- the second largest in the 14 games in San Juan -- came to watch local hero Juan Gonzalez of the Rangers. The fans got what they wanted when Gonzalez came up with the bases loaded in the first.

After a standing ovation, Gonzalez lined a ball off the top of the left-field wall to score two runs. Gonzalez had a run-scoring groundout in the ninth, giving him 1,363 RBIs in his career -- two shy of Orlando Cepeda’s record for Puerto Rican natives.

St. Louis 8, Baltimore 6 -- Albert Pujols capped a four-hit game with a three-run double in the eighth inning at St. Louis to lead the Cardinals to their fifth consecutive victory.

Pujols has seven straight hits, hiking his major league-leading average to .391, and is 19 for 29 during an eight-game hitting streak.

Melvin Mora extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the fourth, but Baltimore has lost four in a row.

The Browns left St. Louis to become the Baltimore Orioles after going 54-100 in 1953.

Houston 11, Tampa Bay 8 -- Jeff Kent hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning and the Astros salvaged a victory at Houston after wasting a seven-run lead.

Houston, which moved past the Cubs into first place in the NL Central for the first time since April 15, led, 7-0, after two innings, then fell behind, 8-7, when Marlon Anderson hit an RBI double off Octavio Dotel (5-1) in the eighth.

The hit scored Julio Lugo, released from the Astros on May 9 after being charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly attacking his wife. Lugo was booed each time he came to the plate.

Toronto 9, Cincinnati 2 -- Roy Halladay won his eighth straight start, matching Roger Clemens’ team record, and Carlos Delgado hit a noteworthy grand slam to lead the Blue Jays at Cincinnati. Delgado’s eighth career slam in the second inning broke a tie with George Bell for the franchise record.

Milwaukee 9, Boston 3 -- Richie Sexson hit his 19th home run, and Wes Helms and Royce Clayton also homered at Milwaukee to lead the Brewers to their season-high fourth consecutive victory.

San Francisco 5, Detroit 3 -- Kirk Rueter won his fifth straight decision and drove in a run and Marquis Grissom had two hits to lead the Giants at San Francisco.

Cleveland 6, Arizona 3 -- Brandon Phillips broke an 0-for-29 slump with a go-ahead single in the sixth inning at Phoenix to help the Indians to their first interleague victory.

Minnesota 7, San Diego 5 -- Chris Gomez hit a two-out, two-run double in the 11th inning to lift the Twins over the Padres at San Diego.

Kansas City at Colorado, ppd. -- The Royals-Rockies game at Denver was postponed because of rain and will be made up today as part of a split doubleheader.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pittsburgh at Atlanta, ppd. -- Heavy rain forced postponement of the Pirates-Braves game. It will be made up Sept. 5 as part of a doubleheader.
