When La Quinta defeated Palm Desert, 381-395, Thursday, it became the first team other than Palm Desert to win the Desert Valley League title since 1989. The victory ended Palm Desert’s 136-match league winning streak. Palmdale Highland set a Golden League record when it shot 368 and clinched the league title April 27 at Tierra del Sol. Murrieta Valley held off Temecula Chaparral to clinch a share of the Southwestern League title.

San Clemente was too deep for Mission Viejo when the teams met in a South Coast League dual last month. Many predict the Diablos will be too strong once the Southern Section Division I finals begin in two weeks. But San Clemente and Mission Viejo figure to match up rather evenly when they meet in the league finals Friday at Lake Forest El Toro. The 500 freestyle race figures to be fast, featuring American record-holder Larsen Jensen of Mission Viejo.
