Twins Get Orosco From the Yankees

The Minnesota Twins acquired 46-year-old pitcher Jesse Orosco in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Orosco, designated for assignment by the Yankees, was acquired Sunday for a player to be named.

Orosco, the oldest player in the major leagues, had a 10.38 earned-run average in 15 games with the Yankees after being acquired from San Diego on July 22.

In 24 seasons, Orosco has pitched in 1,244 games, the most in major league history.

The left-hander was a second-round pick of the Twins in 1978. He was traded to the New York Mets that year and was a teammate of Twin Manager Ron Gardenhire in New York from 1981 to 1985.

The Twins also recalled right-hander Adam Johnson from triple-A Rochester, where he was 6-11 with a 5.35 ERA in 28 games.

Atlanta Brave reliever Kevin Gryboski has a tear in his pitching shoulder and won’t pitch until the final week of the season, at the earliest.

Gryboski, 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 41 2/3 innings over 61 games, was put on the disabled list Thursday with what the Braves said was right shoulder tendinitis.

Shortstop Jose Reyes might sit out the rest of the season after spraining his left ankle Sunday while trying to break up a game-ending double play in the Mets’ 4-1 loss to Philadelphia. Reyes seemed to catch his spikes in the dirt as he slid into second base. The prized rookie rolled over clutching his ankle and writhed in pain on the infield while fans and teammates watched in a hushed Shea Stadium.

Luis Sojo came out of retirement and was activated by the Yankees.

The Yankees made the move after a rib cage injury Sunday to shortstop Derek Jeter, who is expected to sit out at least three games.

Sojo played in parts of six seasons with the Yankees from 1996 to 2001 and was a member of four World Series championship teams.

Sojo, from Venezuela, was hired June 25 by the Yankees as a quasi-coach and liaison to Latin players.

He is not eligible for the postseason roster, because he wasn’t on the roster or a disabled list before Sunday’s deadline.
