Trebilcock, Hart Upset Lynwood

The girls’ basketball team from Newhall Hart may have been the underdog going into the state basketball playoffs, but it was an angry underdog.

And the Indians took out their frustrations on top-seeded Lynwood Tuesday in a Southern California Regional Division I quarterfinal.

Three days after suffering a third consecutive loss to San Clemente in the Southern Section Division I-A final, Hart out-shot and out-executed the two-time defending state champions from start to finish for a 73-61 victory at Lynwood.

“I knew we could win, but I didn’t expect to do it by that score,” said Hart junior forward Ashlee Trebilcock, who finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. “We only had one game to practice for them, but we boxed-out, we did the fundamentals and we hit some shots.”

Hart (29-2) made 10 of its 12 field-goal attempts in the first quarter and four of six in the second to build a 39-20 halftime lead. Sophomore guard Taylor Lilley added 21 points, including four three-point baskets, as the Indians increased their lead to as many as 24 points in the second half.

Lynwood (26-3), the Division I-AA champion, was missing two key players: senior forward Brandi Kimble, who suffered ligament damage to her right knee in the section semifinals and missed Friday’s championship game, and freshman center Lenita Sanford, who suffered third-degree burns on her leg and foot while cooking Monday night.

Coach Ellis Barfield, however, refused to make excuses. “[Hart was] in the zone all game,” he said. “They were disciplined and they had a good game plan. We never found our rhythm. Our rebounding broke down and we had too many scoring droughts.”

Tennessee-bound guard Sade Wiley-Gatewood scored 28 points and Fatimah Stokeley added 10 for Lynwood, which never got closer than 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Hart advances to the semifinals on Thursday, when it will travel to San Diego (29-3), the San Diego Section’s Division I champion and a 54-50 winner over Harbor City Narbonne on Tuesday.

San Clemente 55, Los Angeles Crenshaw 44 -- The Tritons used their huge height advantage to put an end to Crenshaw’s 27-game winning streak in a Division I quarterfinal game at Los Angeles Southwest College.

With no player taller than 5 feet 11, the City Section champions struggled against 6-3 Lindsey Pluimer and 6-4 Lauren Riley.

Pluimer finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and five assists, and Riley added 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Third-seeded San Clemente (27-4) travels to second-seeded Long Beach Poly (28-3), a 64-40 winner over Fresno Clovis West, for a semifinal on Thursday.

Krystle Adams and Lynea Williams, who averaged 13 and 11.5 points, respectively, for Crenshaw (28-2), finished with nine and eight points but combined for only 10 points through three quarters.
