Golfers Get National Accolade

Rory Hie, a junior at Cerritos, has been selected to the AJGA Rolex All-American boys’ golf team and Esther Choe of La Quinta, Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach and Angela Park of Torrance were selected to the girls’ team.

Hie, who won two AJGA events this season, is joined on the boys’ team by two-time player of the year Brian Harman of Savannah, Ga. Harman joins Tracy Phillips (1979-80), Phil Mickelson (1986-88) and Tiger Woods (1991-92) as golfers who were players of the year more than once.

The rest of the All-American boys’ first team: Joe Curran, Hopkinton, Mass; Paul Haley, Dallas; Jamie Lovemark, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; Robert Gates Jr., Gainesville, Fla.; Philip Francis, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jon McLean, Weston, Fla.; Webb Simpson, Raleigh, N.C., and Jarred Texter, Millersville, Pa.

Choe, Lee and Park, who each won two events this season, were joined on the All-American team by player of the year Julieta Granada of Asuncion, Paraguay, and former players of the year Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif., and In-Bee Park of Eustis, Fla.

The rest of the girls’ first team: Amanda Blumenherst, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Tiffany Joh, San Diego; Morgan Pressel, Boca Raton, Fla. and Mallory Hetzel, Summerville, S.C.

Football

David Gettis, a 6-foot-3 receiver at Los Angeles Dorsey, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 15 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Gettis, the two-time boys’ 400-meter state champion, helped the Dons reach the City Section playoff semifinals and finish with a 12-1 record last year. Dorsey is 3-1 this season.

Edwards AFB Desert has forfeited its 12-6 nonleague victory over Lancaster Paraclete on Sept. 3 because it used an ineligible player, according to Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons.

Boys’ Basketball

Omondi Amoke, a 6-6 sophomore considered among the top underclassmen in Southern California, has transferred from Santa Barbara to Oxnard.
