Bosanko Delivers at Crucial Moment

A gust of wind whooshed across the field Saturday night immediately after Robby Bosanko’s 27-yard field goal that lifted visiting Mission Viejo to a 17-14 victory over Concord De La Salle.

The exhale came from the Diablo sideline, particularly from Bob Bosanko, Robby’s father and the special teams coach.

Robby, a junior, had earlier sent a point-after attempt wide left and nearly swung and missed on a 30-yard field goal attempt, which came down near the 10-yard line and would have been returned for a touchdown if not for Bosanko’s open-field tackle.

“He had had a tough night so far,” Mission Viejo Coach Bob Johnson said.

Johnson has known the Bosanko family since the men’s coaching days at Lake Forest El Toro, beginning in the late 1970s.

“I’ve known Robby since he was born,” Johnson said. “I was trying to find coach Bosanko before the kick. I was going to stand next to him, but he was hanging about the 40-yard line. That kick went down the middle.”

The Bosankos probably never figured a field goal would be needed to beat the Spartans. After all, the Diablos did not attempt a field goal last year and had tried only one this season, a successful 40-yarder against Huntington Beach Marina.

“I never thought we would have a game come down to that,” Bob Bosanko said. “As a coach and as a dad, I’ll always remember that moment.”

De La Salle, which came into the season with a national-record 151-game winning streak, is 1-3-1. The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Mission Viejo next season for the final game of a home-and-home deal.

Mission Viejo’s sophomore team sent a message to De La Salle’s before the varsity game, winning, 35-14.

Kickers rarely get a second opportunity the way Paul Zuber did Friday night.

Zuber kicked a 31-yard field goal with four seconds left to lift Eagle Rock to a 24-21 victory over Los Angeles Franklin, the first over its Northern League rival since 1990.

In a 28-26 loss to Franklin last season, Zuber’s 26-yard attempt was blocked in the closing seconds.

The workload hasn’t gotten any lighter for Jesse Ramirez this season.

Ramirez, a 5-foot-7, 160-pound senior running back for Montebello Schurr, carried 46 times for 257 yards and five touchdowns in a 35-31 victory over Rosemead Bosco Tech on Friday. He scored the go-ahead touchdown with about three minutes left.

Ramirez, who rushed for 2,294 yards and 37 touchdowns last season, is averaging 31.8 carries a game and just over seven yards an attempt.

“They do a good job up front,” Schurr Coach Mike Mayoral said of the offensive line, which includes returning All-Almont League selections Luis Silva, Manuel Gomez, Steven Aguirre and Anthony Reynoso.
